I am researching about women in coins and banknotes before 1970. But I am looking for women representing theirselves, don't representing Republic, Liberty, etc. It's important to find coins and banknotes before 1970. What do you guys suggest?
I am interested in swapping world coins. Please let me know if you are interested too
There are quite some Queens who had portraits on their countrys coins.
Some common examples are:
British coinage under the rule of Queen Victoria and of Queen Elizabeth II.
Danish coinage under the rule of Queen Margreth
Spanish coinage under the rule of Queen Isabel II
Also there has been many coronation or wedding commemorates throughout history showing often the king or queen and his/her wife/prince consort.
+ there are ancient roman coins showing the wifes, sisters etc. of the ruling emperors.
Like alfonz said most of the time real women represented on coins and banknotes from before recent years, will be queens, sometimes represented alongside a male consort on commemoratives.
Otherwise here are some rare exceptions to the rule I found; firstly, on an American banknote I own; a portrait of Martha Washington on a series 1891 $1 note:
Not sure if she counts but the Virgin Mary is also a contender:
There is an Argentine woman working on a three books series about women on currency, but only circulating issues.
She already have published 2 books, first about Americas, second is about Africa, Asia and Oceania , and she is working on the third and last one, covering Europe.
She only details real women, that can be identified, and classified in groups: by related to rulers (princesses, queens, presidents, etc. and for their contribution to science, art, politics, etc.
Just 10 options: you understand binary, or you don't.

Ancient Roman imperial coins regularly feature woman, usually the empress. Here are my latest two examples:
Faustina, wife of Antoninus Pius and Crispina, wife of Commodus. Both of theme were important figures in ancient Rome with interesting biographies.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.

Wouldn't be that difficult to find female monarchs on coins.
May I have some on my swap list, just let me know.
