I got a lot of Australian coins recently, and some of them has minor differences between the didderent mints.

The one I got was 1 Cent, from 1981 ( N#1559 ), where a former forum post say there isn't any difference between the (New South?) Wales and Cenberra mint and should then be merged.

Now I want to make a dedicated post for merging those two lines and maybe also a slight encouragement to check for similar cases..?

Referee @brismike  if they want to chip in?

Regarding the 1981 Australian 1 cent coin

183,600,000 were Minted in Canberra, which is in the Australian Capital Territory.

40,300,000 were Minted in Llantrisant which is in Wales, The United Kingdom. (Not New South Wales)

The separate 1981 mintage lines in Numista have been there since the page was created and is the indication of how many were minted at the two different Mints. That is the way they are listed in both Australian Coin Catalogues. (Rennicks & MCDonalds)

A couple of questions:

The ratio of Numista members with the Canberra Mint coin to the Wales Mint coin is 50 while the ratio of minted coins is 4.6. Does that make sense or is it just because people are guessing?  Or maybe there was only one 1981 circulation year line and when the Wales year line was added the existing year line had the Canberra Mint added as the comment.  The page existed since at least 2010. The different mints weren't added to the page until sometime between 2016 and 2019.

This from the Web Archive Org is from October 2016. At that time it had an NRI of 5.

It makes sense for a paper catalog or a non-interactive electronic catalog to use this method to document the number minted at each mint but for an interactive catalog like Numista it has a negative benefit if the user has no way to distinguish which mint their coin was made at. Why force members to blindly guess at a year line?  The catalog should be informative, not cause confusion.

Why isn't the Wales Mint in the mint section?

All the various mints should be listed in the mints section. Also the Wales mint is highly inaccurate and inappropriate and should be The Royal Mint.

If there is no known distinction between the coins minted at the two places, a reasonable solution could be:

  • one date line, since collectors have no way of knwing which mint their coin is from and hence which line to put it on
  • combined mintage in the mintage field on the date line
  • comment on date line: Combined mintage for Canberra Mint and The Royal Mint
  • both mints listed in the Mint Field
  • note in the Comment section on how many were known to be struck at each mint.

This is the way.

I would just add that other catalogs that list two date lines (one for each mint) do not have the Numista feature of adding our collections, so it is not an issue for them.

Yes, that was my point above.  😉
