Hi guys!

Some time back I bought this coin and just now I noticed that the 1898 edition is pretty rare because it was only minted in proof quality.

I'm not very good at recognizing fakes so can someone tell me if it's fake or just a deteriorated proof?

The coin is: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1292.html

And here are the pictures, thanks in advance!

Eddie

What about weight and other measurements? Are they ok?

It weighs around 0.1 gram less than it should which is probably due to wear. The diameter checks out.
IMHO, it's real .. The denticles, obv and rev are uniform ..

What about the edge lettering .. are the letters uniform depth ... ?

The edge lettering is a bit shallow (don't know what's standard for coins this old) but all uniform at least.
Hello,

This is fake. you can google pictures of similar coin with the same wear and tear, e.g. dot at about 6 o'clock + scratch or die crack before 50.

Hope you didn't pay too much)

The depth is not a real concern, it's whether the letters a uniform depth. If they are then I'd say real ..

Lets see if more users give their opinion but weight is always a good indicator and with that little diference, probably it is a good one

Edit. Didnt saw Grinya's answer, maybe its a very good fake? ?

I find the coin highly suspicious:
Firstly, it has a 'sandy' surface, as if it wasn't printed on a smooth planchet.
In addition the details on the eagle and coats of arms are very rough, but the details are not worn of, but rather they were already rough on the die.

(Unfortunately) I think you're right because my coin is similar. Didn't pay a lot and I'm definitely keeping it because it looks nice. Thanks everyone!
