1965 Kennedy half dollar

9 αναρτήσεις
I’m new to Numista and have very little experience with coins. I believe I may have a 1965 Kennedy half struck on a 90% silver planchet. Local coin collectors have told me this coin does not exist. Can anyone one help me to determine if it is 40% or 90% silver. My scale has it at 12 grams in weight. Please see the attached pictures and thanks for any help. The 1st is the ‘65 next to a 1971. 2nd is the reverse of the ‘65 and ‘71. 3rd is the edge of the ‘65 between Kennedy’s dating 1967 thru 1970.

The simple explanation is this:
1964 was 90% silver
1965 - 1970 were 40% silver.

If indeed there was somehow an improbable mixup in planchets, your coin would weigh 12.5g. You probably need a more accurate scale as the 1965 should weigh 11.5g.
It is silver. Just 40% not 90%

Checked for information on coin. I also believe I have a 1965 Kennedy halve 90% silver

Why do you think your coin is 90% silver as opposed to 40% like a typical coin? Do you have access to a reliable scale that reads to the nearest 0.1 grams? That would provide a definitive answer.

That's not so sure. When you know, that you can easily have a 6% deviation on masses on modern coins! Here an example:

Because my coin looks exactly like the coin pictured in post.  I will have to check  the weight.
