I have a Spink book but still find it hard ID what type of 1863 penny it is. The book has just confused me between beaded/ tooth edged, number of leaves on wreaths and nose shape. Is there any Victorian coin experts that could help me? many thanks.
The coin is in really good condition considering I dug it up from a sandy beach and never cleaned in any way. There is about 4/5 different types of 1863 from what I can see from the Spink book.
Thanks, for ID . yes the tooth borders seems different in areas looks more beaded but mainly toothed. find its easier to ID hammered coins than this Victorian one. many thanks again.

If you look closer at your Spink, you will see that the 1863 issue can only be Obverse 6 (1860-74):
Laureate and draped bust facing left, hair tied in bun, finer hair strands at nape of neck, wreath of 16 leaves, leaf veins raised, no signature, toothed border and thin linear circle both sides. There is a prominent flaw on the top stop of the colon after D at the end of the legend.
Similarly from the detail provided in Spink, the 1863 issue can only be Reverse G (1861-75):
Britannia seated right on rocks with convex shield and trident, no signature, date below in exergue, bell-topped lighthouse to left, lamp area depicted with five vertical lines, no rocks to left, sea crosses linear circle, ship sailing to right, toothed border.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
