$1200... well now $0 to spend [επιλυμένο]

My stocks have been doing really well, and while I wouldn't consider myself rich, I just moved $1200 into my bank account, with the intent to buy coins. In particular, US coins, for my type collection

$200 just went into a 1795 lettered edge 1/2¢ (will be my second 1700's US coin :) when it arrives)
$153 to a 1859-O seated liberty $1
$14 for an 1861 3¢, holed but mint error, dies rotated 180* (It is medal instead on coin alignment)

suggestions for the other $833?

And interesting foreign (if they're at least 150 years old) coins are also an option

What I DO NOT have:
1/2¢ - Left or right liberty cap

--- either reverse Flowing Hair
--- Coronet head, "head of 38", "silly head", "booby head"
2¢ - 1864 small motto

--- flowing hair
--- either draped bust
10¢
--- either draped bust
--seated liberty, easier to list what I have, 1840-P and 1877-CC (2 of 8 types)
25¢,
--- Daraped Bust small eagle
--- Seated Liberty, only have 1876 (1 of 8)
--- Standing Liberty Type 2 (raised date)
50¢ Seated Liberty, only have 1853-O (1 of 7)
$1 -
--- Flowing Hair
--- both Draped bust

Help me spend some money!
Can you afford a reasonable condition Flowing Hair or Draped Bust dollar with US$833? If so I would go for that if I were you.

Otherwise for 150+ year old foreign coins; if you gave me your money, a 40 Franc coin would probably be what I'd go for:

Thats a lot of money. I usually buy cheaper coins, but I have a few ideas:

- A coin produced from bell metal during a siege. Also its from Luxembourg, 1795, and not cheap (usually these go for under 50€ depending on condition) https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces36183.html

- This one is a bit weird and usually costs more, but it has a mintage of 2000 and its from an unusual place. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces65968.html (but its 1910)

- This coin is not very large or thick. Its cheap, but the number one rule in owning it is to never put it on a flat surface: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces53301.html

- If you like Russian coinage or large coins,
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces17970.html is an interesting one

- I dont know a lot about US coinage, but I like the gold dollar and the 3 cent coins.

-I also suggest buying https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces32440.html if you see it for under 8€. Its an interesting coin as 2 Markkaa coins were never minted after this. Possibly the weirdest denomination Finnish coin of the old markka.
Not looking for a single coin to spend that on, sorry cass... I like the idea of seige coin, I don't own any of those! I don't own any greenland coins so that's cool as well, I think I'll look into that. Ever looked into the story or Peter Freuchen? He did a lot of exploring in greenland, he was a serious bad-ass dude.

Um, why not?

Awesome! Down to $794 now...

THIS is an $800 dollar coin. But I think at least for this round, I'd rather have multiple cheaper coins

Slightly more common with a mintage of 5000 instead of 2000.

down to $738. Next?

Most people I know who suddenly have a lot of money to spend either spend it all at once on an expensive coin or two, or parcel it out amongst a whole bunch. I've done both before, but if you're going for the latter option, here are some of my recommended foreign coins (8:

-French écu d'argent from before the Revolution; they start from around 75 euro, and a nice late Louis XIV type will cost around 200 euro.

-Russian roubles; the early 19th century types are around 80-90 euro in reasonable condition.

-Swiss "Shooting thaler" 5 Franc coins; cleaned ones are cheaper; think around 100 euro
Just checked off that missing standing liberty quarter type with a 1918, down to $716

Um, why not?
If you asked why not put it on a flat surface: Its thin.

You can damage paper with the coin.

One idea more:

This cardboard notgeld coin may cost a few euros (6-20€ usually), but it usually is quite cheap.
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces19212.html
I looked at those, as well as some clay/porcelain notgeld last week. definitely as option.

Cass, links to what you're talking about?

I guess it was kinda sudden, I looked at my stocks for the first time in a few months and was like "holy shit!!!" I've already saved up enough to buy another gun I've been wanting, so this money is going to coins!

Sure thing:

French coins:

Russian roubles:

Swiss Shooting Thalers:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/suisse-1.html#c_suisse5957

Another sub-type checked off... Down to $665
The swiss shooting thalers look interesting, but ebay shows them as too expensive for what I'm looking for
I think I'm looking for a bunch of coins in the $70 and under price range, unless someone directs me to a really awesome USA coin that is under-priced.

This is one of my favourite coins, it is quite interesting, large and cheap, but new. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11013.html (A 80-years old young fellow) you can get that for under 7€ in a good conditionI'd say.

Swedish Riksdalers are very interesting, but often not cheap. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces37578.html

If you want a really big silver coin, https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces111330.html 45g silver coin is quite common but unknown to many.

Some Swiss cantons have nice coins. I like the Schwyz coins. Kissi pennies are also quite cheap. German states also have very cool coins that many people dont collect, https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces132188.html
Or maybe a lot. https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-Mostly-1700s-1800s-Coins-A2/332808815066?hash=item4d7cf381da:g:3JgAAOSwybpbnx8M
I would bid on many good auctions. Depends on what you like to collect, and in what condition.
How about some James II Gun Money? https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?mode=simplifie&p=1&l=irlande&r=gun+money&e=irlande&d=&ca=3&no=&i=&v=&m=&a=&t=&dg=&w=&u=&f=&g=&c=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&te=y&cat=y

Some can be found fairly cheaply and they have a great story to go with them. Its the only coin I'm aware of that features the month of minting on it.
The gun money is tempting.

I think I'm going to see if I can get a type 2 and 3 $1 gold coins (I already have an 1853 type 1) and if there's anything left I'll get the James II gun money. If you know of a good deal on either of those $1 link it here!

Apmex has "cleaned" random date type 2 for $280 and type 3 for $210. So I'm looking for cheaper than that if possible.
Melbourne Centenary florin, not 150 years old, but a nice affordable low mintage coin with an awesome design
What? Me Worry
Well this evening I just found out my friend was behind on his truck payment and about to sell his AR-15 (this one is about worth $700) for $250, so I gave him $400 for it and he can buy it back in the future. So I guess I'm at about $265 now.
And, I just got a random date Type 3 USA $1 gold from Apmex. So, I guess that concludes this thread!

There is a lot of auctions going on on ebay
https://m.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=gun+money+ireland&_sop=16&_pgn=3

Half crowns, schillings, even a crown, 6pences, halfpennies.

This one is worn, but currently 14€ https://www.ebay.com/itm/1689-1690-Ireland-Gun-Money-Shilling-G-Very-SCARCE-King-James-II-OLD-Irish-Coin/202437579716?hash=item2f223853c4:g:SLEAAOSwmaVbnE9B

And here is an information page with a lot of information: https://www.google.fi/amp/s/oldcurrencyexchange.com/2014/06/15/james-ii-gunmoney-a-photo-blog-of-the-known-variations/amp/

My other purchase today -- The sight is absolutely worthless until I replace that stupid gas block

I cant wait to hear what you found from these.

I see that there are a few from the german states, an Greek coin, a more used piece from the Russian empire, France, USA, a possible 1944 Swedish coin...And the coin with 5 lines of text is from 1750. Could be a https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15310.html

I saw (red arrow) this: I had an 1854 that I found as a kid, but it was stolen along with some other stuff.

And at the worst, I have 30 really random things to throw in the tip jar at the bar!

Indubitably!

What coin is this? The small one on top of the 5 centimes

It seems that there are also a few medieval (?) ones

It's probably a 1 Schilling coin from the German states, I have one from Hamburg:

This has been a fun thread - I had a great time spending this money! I'll post pictures (although guaranteed poor resolution) when they arrive.

I guessed that one totally wrong.

Have any of those coins arrived yet?
Most of them, I posted them up in the September additions thread. That coin was a 1765 from Hamburg.

Only ones I'm still waiting on are the Greenland coin and the James II gun money. They're both shipping from the Czech Republic, so takes forever to get here.

Aha! I was right on the money! :O

Or as Col. Hans Landa would say:
I just sold some 30-pin SIMMs that I had laying around, now I have $33 sitting in my paypal account. Any suggestions on an interesting ebay coin lot? I didn't know this old computer stuff was worth anything, I'm kinda shocked right now. Anyway, coin lot suggestion?

Nevermind, I found a few lots that were tempting, but I went with an 1854 half dollar to help fill out my type collection
