Good morning all

On a recent trip to Marocco I got hold of three coins. The first is a Tunisia coin, km34, but I do not know how to date it. Can somone please help

The second is presumenly also from Tunisia, but i have been unable to identify it. Would someone be able to help? The coin is silver, 15.64mm x 14.54 mm and 0.92mm thick and it weighs 1.38g.

The third I also got there, but as far as seeing the Ottomann "symbol" on it, I am at a loss. It is also silver, 22.6mm and 1.02mm thick and weighs 2,80g. Do anyone have an idea what this is, and from where?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

In my opinion, your first one is this one: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces112923.html

As for the last one, it looks suspicious. Probably a token? I'm considering this, because the ottoman years don't look like this on your coin.

Or, it could be from somewhere else, entirely different state. Remember that even coins from Pakistan have the tougra(Ottoman one).

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Stefan

Thanks for the replying. The First coin is silver, and as far as I can see Tunisia km 34.

The second one is a fake. I got the same exact coin when I was in Morocco thinking it was an Algerian coin. I asked the Numista community about it and they said it was a fake or a "replica."

Here is the link to that forum discussion: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic58545.html

Its quite sad as it would be a brilliant coin if it were real... :(

Hope this helps :)

(p.s. I think we could have gone to the same shop as all of the coins shown were at the shop that I bought the fake coin. But do not worry, only the last one is fake:)

Sorry Edit: Not the second one the third one is fake :)
Thanks. There were three and they were exact the same. So though as much.

The second coin is of the variety shown here:

https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=52471

It was struck during the last part of the Hafsid rule of Tunisia area, before the Ottomans took over. It is not a Marinid coin, as stated in the reference above. While assigned to the Hafsids, it may have been struck by local tribes in the area.

There are a number of varieties, with single lines and double lines separating the legend lines. It is scarce, but can occasionally be found on ebay. They usually weigh about 1.3 grams. The legends are identical to those of the Almohad / Muwahhid Dynasty in North Africa.
Awesome, thank you for the Feedback.

Do you have any idea of the time Frame, time period when These coins were issue? As it is not on this Website, I would like to add it, but need the approximate time.

Other Information, ea. a KM number, or other reference number? And I assume I can add it under Tunisia

A reference you can use is Hazard, H. W. The Numismatic History of Late Medieval North Africa, 1952. #1101 note (p269-270) and plate VIII 1101 rules. http://numismatics.org/digitallibrary/ark:/53695/nnan106529/pdf

As this was struck before Tunisia was a country, it technically should be under the Hafsid Dynasty. However, it was centered in Tunis and using the country name of Tunisia would work.

Time frame is very difficult to determine. The legends and square style coin were started under the Muwahhids (1130-1269 A.D.) and continued by the Hafsids (1228-1574 A.D.). A good guess is that they were made during the last hundred plus years of Hafsid rule, around 1435-1574.

The legends are the following:

لا اله الا الله
الامر كله لله
لا قوة الا بالله

There is no god except God
The whole commandment is unto God
There is no strength except in God

الله ربنا
محمد رسولنا
المهدي امامنا

God is our Lord
Muhammad is our Messenger
Al-Mahdi is our leader
Awesome, Thank you very much. I will upload it, using the Information you provided.
