

In order to commemorate 50 years of events of 17. November 1939, when Czech students openly demonstrated against German occupation of Czechoslovakia. In response, demonstrations were forcefully dispersed, their leaders executed, Czech Universities were closed and 1 200 students were taken to concentration camps. Two years later, 17. November was declared the International day of Students, and remains as such to this very day.
In the evening of 17. November 1989 Czech students led massive demonstration against Communists government. Police force intervened, beaten the students and forcefully dispersed the demonstration. From that day onwards, more and more people gathered every day which ultimately led to downfall of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia. This events are now known as Velvet Revolution.
