What's your best deal?
This one I got from a bag of foreign coins at a local online auction for $8 Canadian for the bag X-D
Trying to complete my large cent collection right now. Any help would be appreciated
I got a lot of coins from the local auction website for NZ$10 (US$6.50 or £4.50) and it included this coin

Catalogue value in this condition US$550.00

As well as that coin there was also these iron beauties from the first world war:

Three of these

Two of these

Some other old Norwegian coins with a value of US$5.00-US$20.00 each and then two of these

One from 1909 which I kept and the other from 1915 which I swapped. They're both listed as rare and valued at around US$20

So I ended up with around US$700.00 worth of coins from a purchase of US$6.50 and then I swapped the 1915 2 ore for more coins and sold the excess iron coins for about US$30.00 That's my best ever haul and I don't expect to see its like again for a very long time.
I once paid $50 USD for an 1888 Kingdom of Hawaii 1/4 coin and only 3 are known to be in the Cleveland, Ohio area.
Very nice love to see that 8)

I've gotten some crazy deals on eBay.

Found a proof set that included an United States $5 coin for about $50.

I also received a lot of coins for $30 that happened to include two tenth Oz. Canadian gold coins.

How do some people not realize they have gold on their hands? That's fantastic for you though, those are once (twice I supposed) in a lifetime deals.

Take a penny, leave a penny... or two

That 2 kroner patina is amazing!

Many years ago, a company rep always came to see me, as the company he worked for always had new items for sale so I tried them out first. Thats the boring bit done.

He knew I was interested in coins and one day, brought in a large bag full of nice coins, including UK sets, single silver proofs and many others. Also in the bag was a small rectangular red box and when I opened it, I was shocked at what I found. A half sovereign, a one sovereign and a two sovereigns from 1989.(500th Anniversary of the Sovereign) set with certificate. I told the guy I was not selling this set, but I would sell the rest.

Took the whole bag to a coin dealer who offered me £485.00 for the lot. I then struck a deal with the guy that I would sell everything except the 1989 set, and whatever the difference, I would pay him cash, which he accepted.

So ebay and some private sells went extremely well and in the end, I paid him £65.00.

I have no idea what the value is now, but it is certainly not £65.00

I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

I've been buying and selling for a few years, mainly pick up items at UK auctions. one lot a few years ago consisted mainly of silver medallions, a cased set of kings and Queens of England, and a set of 4 Churchill and Eisenhower white metal medallions. Paid about £600 for the lot. Shifted the K&Q set and got a bit of profit on the whole lot, so decided to put the other 4 on eBay. listed them and described them as not having hallmarks and I never got a sniff, so I ended up taking them to a bullion dealer. lucky I did. Turned out the were platinum, they gave me £6.5k for them.

Probably the most awesome outcome ever.

This will be like the gold standard from now on

I once got a Victorian gothic crown in solid GVF from a bag of dip tray junk coins that I bought!

The crown was worth a couple of hundred Pounds - nice. I have had better 'deals' since then, but this one still glows as one of the sweetest!

I was once in a second hand store and found a basket with bags of mixed coins for 10 kroner each (~1.30€). One of these bags had Australian silver coins, both Pence, Shillings and Florins in relativ good quality for at least 60-70 DKK (~9,4€) in silver value alone. There were also some more coins I don't remeber, haha.

I was also once on a flea market and found this Greek 30 Drachmai, silver

N#7222

I got it for less than one Euro! Payed 5 DKK, as that was what the seller wanted for it. Think the seller was most focused on Danish and colonis' coins and notes, so most world currency was just the standard price per piece.

I have a soft spot for origami paper cranes.
Read or watch about "Sadako Sasaki and the Thousand Paper Cranes".

A bunch of Belgian Congo coins mixed in with a few wheat cents listed on E-Bay as “Mostly Pennies” for $1. No one else bid.

HoH

I bought some circulating commemorative coins from North Korea on ebay. It is really hard to find them on eBay for a good price. It also came with a silver South Korean coin, worth nearly as much as what I paid for, for the whole lot. I got 13 coins all up.

Hmmm, those coins are not circulating in NK, and they never have …

Yes, someone decided to update the coins information after I spent money on them. Which is annoying. They did say they were circulating coins.

But, why would circulating coins in North Korea have English writings on them? Enhlish is the language of the state enemy.

Managed to get this beautiful rare note in UNC condition for about US$50 at auction. N#377469. It’s practically impossible to find it for less than US$350!

I got it from a flea market in Poland. I paid in Pound Sterling because the seller wanted that more than Zloty. I paid the princely sum of £5 for it. The lowest recorded sale on Numista was £311 (+ Premium).

Outside of coins: The Broons Book 1942
Even going through the relatively big name auction houses archives, I've only managed to find a handful of sold copies. So far as I can tell, there's not a single copy anywhere to be bought on the internet. I've only found three sales going back over twenty years. 2006 (£3,010), 2014 (£5,000), 2016 (£2,500).
It is frequently stated as the rarest of the entire Broons series - In part because it was published during the middle of WWII so paper rationing seriously limited how many were made, plus there was a strong drive to recycle them afterwards. Even though it's the second book in the series, it's rarer and usually more expensive than the first (published 1940)!

I've even heard from lifetime collectors that there's probably only about 4 or 5 copies actually in private hands (in their opinion based on known sales), and only 3/4 in archival libraries (Two in the the legal depositary libraries; British Library London & Scottish National Library Edinburgh, and one or two in the original publisher's archives. I know they definitely have at least one).
I paid £4 for my copy, or £6.55 including postage. Admittedly, mine is in rough condition but complete! Saw it on ebay, figured it was a “starting price” auction but was actually a buy it now. I stressed about asking them to use a more premium delivery service but then thought they might've realised it was rarer than they initially thought. Fortunately, all arrived safely!

Are you sure it is original?

With the book, 100%. Books of that area are something I have many of, including many from the same publisher. The thick almost cardboard feel of the paper, quality of the print, the smell of the paper. I even checked the binding material, the binding method, the location of the holes on the binding, and how many pages each binding held. It is unquestionably original, and was just a case of someone not recognising the treasure they were selling.

With the coin, it's not my usual area of expertise but the size, weight, lettering, milled edge etc all checks out, and it certainly looks & feels like vintage European silver. Detail & colouring looks reasonable for an aged piece, neither too sharp nor too shiny. Played around with the “ping” test and magnets - all seems to be above board. The seller just had a bunch of coins out for sale, vast majority of them being Polish-USSR era and really cheap. I saw that one, loved the design & decided it was worth taking a punt on. It was an oddity in what they were selling; if they had lots of coins from that era or lots of precious metal coins, I might've been a bit more suspicious.
Without doing an acid test or something like that, I'm reasonably satisfied it's the genuine article. Maybe 90-95% confident.
