I gave up on collecting modern US coins after the state quarters. All the post-war coinage, for the most part, looks terrible and that includes the Commemoratives. There are only a few gems in modern US coinages. The coins during and prior to the war were awesome and had great eye appeal!! The attention to detail was just amazing and somehow we lost it after the war. Have you seen the borders and the minute details in the standing liberty quarters. Consider the following coin from Wikipedia

I would tend to agree...most Americans collect just American and i never saw the fascination. I focus primarily on Europe which I think has nicer coins. But I will say the old US half dollar commemoratives 1892-1956 are absolutely fantastic...someday I want to have a set. Also the new national park quarters are really beautiful...but thats it

You're right not all of them have bad design. For example one coin that I want to add in my collection is pilgrim half dollar 1920 with an incredible design.

The design commemorates the East to West Coast railroad. Construction started from West to East and from East to West and they met in Utah. Supposedly a golden spike was the last spike to be driven into the railroad tie where they met.
That is one of the most important turning points in American history and hence I am not surprised that Utah chose that reverse design. With the completion of the East-West railroad connection, it helped foster the industrial revolution as goods such as agriculture, minerals, and energy could be transported from the west to the east. Furthermore, it expanded our "manifest destiny" of westward expansion, all with the accomplishment of that little "golden spike". And don't forget the "chinamen" and other immigrants of the west who helped build the western railroad for that to become reality...
There are a few nice American designs. The 2009 Lincoln cent series is really nice. The 2009 satin cents from mint sets are spectacular. They are also made of the same composition as the original 1909 bronze cent: 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc. Also, the 2009-S Lincoln series is also bronze. These will be the last bronze coins from the U.S. mint. Yet Numista doesn't even have these coins listed in their catalog. These two coin series are some of the nicest designs in the history of U.S. coinage. Also, the nickel Westward coin series of 2004-2006 are some nice coin designs. They are among my favorites.
Some people like to rag on American coins, but lets face it: most world coins, except collector coins, are lousy. The euro has very unattractive coins. I think they are worse than American coins. Most modern coins are made of aluminum zinc or steel and look cheap.
