4 Pfenninge 1872 A

7 αναρτήσεις
Hi there,
First time posting here (be kind)... ;-)

I have found in a bunch of coins I got, a 4 Pfenninge from 1872 (A) and I had a search on various numismatic websites but I cannot seem to find anything. All I can seem to find is that it's 'rare'.

Any one here could tell me what kind of 'rare' I'm looking at?

Many thanks,
Marc

Hi Hippaforalkus,
Thanks for responding. The image you share is not the year I have. The one I have is of 1872. I have attached pictures of the coin but for now I cannot seem to get the right angle that will show the '4' and the full date '1872'.
I'll try again in a short while.

  Welcome to the site.  :)
That is the right link to the page for your coin (assuming it is 1872 - not sure).
The title of the page says 'German states (Prussia) Years 1861-1872' so we just show one coin (within those years) to let members know what it looks like, in this case 1868.

EDIT: But as the reply below correctly states, it cannot be 1872 after all (due to the crown's shape). I do see part of a vertical line where the third digit is, so indeed is most likely 1842 date (as 1872 would presumably have a diagonal line in the middle of the 7 number). The coins mentioned begin at 1821 so cannot be 1812 date either. Then your 1872A would be the 1842A instead.

This page has prices and shows what an 1842A looks like, for comparison ...

So that third link in the reply below would be your coin (though it shows an 1841 coin) - but the page is for 1841 and 1842 dates. All credit to BizzoDoes for noticing the crown shape.  8)

Hi Marclonus,

Thanks for the photos, unfortunately I don't think it's 1872.
It's definitely German States 4 Pfennig, but I'd probably date it at 1842
(that's a guess as I can't see the 7 or the A in the photo).

If you look at the shape of the crown on the obverse, it's pre 1846, I'm afraid.
So it would say it is one of these, depending on the 3rd digit of the year:

I'm not an expert in any kind of coins, but I reckon I'm good at research and will do my best to help. Feel free to tell me my identifications/valuations/gradings are wrong. It's the only way I'll learn.
Hi guys,
Here is what I could best photograph.
It is 100% 1872.
  Sorry - no.
Firstly, as written above, the crown shape is wrong.
Secondly, I have seen a picture of an 1872 coin and there is no line at the base of the 7 number - so it is like I type here  7  with just a pointed base. The NGC link shows an 1842 date coin, and that page has an image showing the line at the base of the 4 number (unlike  4  as it is typed here). Your new pictures confirm the 'underlined' third digit. As in underlined like the 1 in the date on your coin is.  :)
I found a better picture of a coin from the 1870's, so here is 1871 to show the 7 number the mint used ...

Notice also the angle where the arms of the top of the crown join the central vertical part: on the 1871 coin shown they are at right angles, whereas on your coin they dip down slightly when joining it.
I used part of your new image and put small dots around parts of the date I could see ...

So I am convinced it is 1842 not 1872, but is probably easier to see when in hand.  :)
