Anyone good with the dates on Ethiopia coins ?
I see in the new Numisdoc there are converters for  Hebrew / Islamic / Japanese / Persian / Thai
so I am not sure how Ethiopia works. On the page

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces4759.html

there are dates 1969 (1977)  1996 (2004)  1997 (2005)  2000 (2008)  so is their calendar eight years behind Western or in front e.g. is 1969 the Western or Ethiopian date ?
I attach a picture of a coin I have and included a chart I found. The symbols I interpret as
being 10 9 100 8 9 so assume the coin is dated 1989 but not sure if that is right or what the Western equivalent may be (either 1981 or 1997).
Maybe it is just a case of adding 1989 to the above page - if I am correct and someone checks beforehand.  Thanks :)

Hello
The symbols are 10 9 100 60 9, so the date is 1969 EE(1977 AD).
You can use date converter on http://apps.creounity.com/time_machine/en/index.php?go=main.htm.

Ah - I see now.  z|
Maybe that chart I used is wrong as the same symbols are on there for 8 and 60
Now I know also their 1969 is our 1977 (so 2011AD is 2003EE). That's solved then - thank you !  :)

Hello,
This is a very good site. (apps.creounity)
But I can not find this date.

Hello,
፪ሺህ is year 2000.
I think it is 2009
The chart on my picture does not show what the middle symbol is but perhaps it is for 1,000
The first of the three symbols is a 2 and the last is a 9 so maybe  2  x 1,000 + 9  = 2009

P.S. I see Xavier sent in a reply two minutes before mine! Perhaps that is also right as there is no symbol for 0 in my chart. Whichever it is there is not that date on the 5 Santeem page ...

Also may I take the opportunity to ask something that has been puzzling me for a while - what computer settings do I have to change to make these symbols in the picture below appear as they should? I get the same square with a number in each corner in the Special Keyboard as well - for Burmese, Chinese/Japanese, Sinhalese only as the other 12 options are alright.
I know this is not a computer helpdesk site, but just thought I would ask. I guess it just needs a box ticking somewhere (though why a system would be devised to NOT show the proper characters, like I am currently getting, also eludes me - lol). Thanks  :)

I realize my last message wasn't very clear.
The date on Archie's coin is 2000 in the Ethiopian calendar. The first symbol is a 1 and the two last symbols mean thousand.
Year 2000 of the Ethiopian calendar lasted from September 12th, 2007 to September 10th, 2008 in the Gregorian calendar.

Concerning Zac's question, I think you are missing appropriate fonts. But I can't help you any further.

Thank you, Archie52! Truth to be told that's the fitst time I see this kind of EE 2000 inscription.

I'll add this feature into Time Machine's Ethiopian converter today!
Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the comments. Xavier is right.
This is a sure evidence.
Hello,
The handy calendar converter has just been translated and it is now available in English:
https://en.numista.com/numisdoc/calendar-ethiopian-40.html
I'm sorry for so long correcting...

Now Time Machine's converter for Ethiopia DOES support ፪ሺህ in both direct and reverse directions:http://apps.creounity.com/time_machine/en/index.php?go=ethiopia.php

Moreover, I've prepared a manual that explains how Ethiopian numeric system is based: http://apps.creounity.com/time_machine/en/index.php?go=ethiopian_numerical_system_en.php
That article in not mine, though I've made it more visually perceptible in comparison with the original.

I believe all of that will be of use for the forum users.
hey, everyone!

I'm glad to announce that Time Macnine is being updated. The new engine, an imploved version of the previous one, has been created and is now being applied, tested and debugged. Now all systems that have converters will have scrollers with pics of the coins. This feature will be available for everyone in a couple of days.

And, I'm gonna add 2000EE pic of 5 centimes provided in this topic by Archie52 into the scroller. I believe he won't mind that  :`
ZacUK, as Xavier suggested you are missing some fonts and more appropriately some language packs. You can install these through Windows.
