UK 2 pence Elizabeth II (4th portrait) 2008 (KM 987)

Can we confirm that this year, 2008, was ONLY minted in a quantity of 100,000 and these coins were only released in sets?

If so, to find one in circulation should be quite unusual? Though not unheard of.

Where did that information come from?

I have several 2008 2 pence coins just in my change so I'd guess that it's probably incorrect. Hope this helps =]
Scratch that. Just realised my error! Grr. I didn't notice the design difference from the ordinary 2 pence. Sorry about that.

KM#987 = First design - fleur de lis (by Christopher Ironside) with 10,600,000 mintage in 2008

KM#1108 = Second design - shield (by Matthew Dent) with 241,679,000 mintage in 2008

That information from Royal Mint. I too thought I had seen both versions in change, and yes I have seen a few of the newer design (part of a shield, which for the 2p has a lion on). And I also have so far got two of the old design in change - nothing special-looking about them, so not noticeable that removed from a set. The mintage combined is 252,279,000 so there is about a 4% chance that a 2008 2p found in change would be the old design.
So I reckon both pages above have the wrong mintage (though perhaps someone could check).

Where did you get the information from the Royal Mint? I couldn't find it when I looked!
Oh okay, I found the information from the Royal mint. Looks like (judging by the Royal Mints figures) the data on Numista is wrong. The old style 2 pence was still minted in vast quantities in 2008, and NOT just available in sets.

I guess all their mintages are just for circulation coins on those pages.
