I've just done a quick search of other sites related to South Africa issues and it seems to be an even split.
You might want to search the archives of the Pretoria mint. Although the 1892 issues were struck at the Royal Mint is ought to be possible to get the correct mintages from the primary source.
A word of caution, it's probably archived as a huge pdf file so be prepared for a seriously long page load.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

It's pretty much the same as all coins, unless registered as scrapped officially then the records will stand the same. I know of thousands of pre decimal UK coins that have been weighed in but not registered both copper and cupro which obviously adjusts the availability but will never adjust the mintage. This also includes the silver coins as many are melted down due their poor quality.
Yes I agree with you Tony re the silver coins but I thought that the copper coins would have not been that much affected.

Pennies were minted for four years only. Unlike most other denominations which were minted from 1892-1898

Slightly off topic but as Tony mentioned UK pre decimal pennies....
I was trying to get accurate mintage figures and survival rates for the 1926 ME penny the mintage for which is included with the Type I 1926 issues. Anyway, back in the 1950's or 60's even there was a massive survey done on circulating coins. Thousands of collectors sent in their results over a several year period and they were able to calculate the mintages for unknown years by comparing the number circulating against the known mintages. They also produced numbers for likely survival rates.
It was some very worthwhile info. but unfortunately I didn't bookmark it. It's not hard to find though and is well worth the time.
A similar project was underway for US cents but that appears to have been abandoned. The website is still up but hasn't been updated for some years.

More so the copper simply because of the availability of them (granted not in good or even vg condition) hence the reason so many have been scrapped. Believe me I know because of knowing people that work in industries. To be honest unless the coin is truly regarded as rare there are so many people out there who would rather just weigh it in than explore is unbelievable.
Another point I would also like to make out is hold on to your SILVER - it is going to through the roof a lot sooner than most think. (Mark my words) it will happen.
