I would like to get a bit more familiar with some of the low mintage or key date modern coins from around the globe. Please share one from your part of the world, that really stands out. Let's try for no duplicates under this topic. If they could all be under 500,000 mintage, that would be great, but, there are no restrictions.
Country, denomination, year, mintage and if possible, link to coin in the Numista catalogue.
Thanks, I'll throw the first one out.
Here is a coin that many of us have or have seen, however, not many have this particular year...
Mintage of only 4,000 in that year but the value in UNC condition is only $5 which is about the same as the other years for that KM number which have mintages around 1,000,0000
The Jersey series of "Parish" pound coins was an interesting series...
- The first modern coin series to feature each sub-region of the issuing state, pre-dating (for example) the Canadian Provincial quarters of 1992
- Mintages of 10,000 per coin!! Silver proofs exist with an even lower mintage.
- Krause books these coins (again, mintage of 10,000) at $3.25 to $3.50 each in UNC!
I am trying to complete this set before anyone else catches on!!
Απόσπασμα: redsmithstudiosI don't understand how coins with low mintage are so undervalued? I guess people just don't collect Fiji?
World coins are fairly unpopular at coin shows and shops near me, treated like dead fish. The prevailing attitude seems to be "If it's not American silver or American gold, it's crap".
It's rather amateurishly, misleadingly and embarrassingly described in the Numista database as "rare". It isn't but it is borderline scarce and can be picked up quite cheaply.
Yes, non-Americans, there is a mint at West Point. In 1996 a small run of business strike dimes was produced there for inclusion in the mint sets for that year. As the 1996W dime is a genuine business strike coin there is a significant demand for them. So much so in fact that the single dime is often sold at prices which exceed that of the entire mint set. Again, these can be picked up for little cost if you are patient. I have two of them, both from bulk lots of unc. dimes bought for just over face value.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Huh, I've got marked that I have two of those as well. This is one of those situations where I don't even recall having them. Think I'm going to have to revisit those tonight.
"What we are is not as important as what we aren't"
David, they normally strike commemorative junk and bullion coins, I believe the 1996 dimes are the only example of a modern business strike produced at West Point.

They're the only business strikes to carry the W mint mark. West Point produced cents in the 1970s and 1980s, but without mint marks, making them indistinguishable from Philadelphia issues.
