French ecus

Are French ecus hammered or machine-struck?

Interestingly the answer is both.  The coins had their origins in the 13th century and were hammered up until the 1640s, when they began to be milled.  They fell out, as with most traditional French concepts including pre-decimal (non-decimal) currency, during the French revolution.

An ecu was a thaler (40mm+) sized silver coin from France

So these are absolutely no relation to the Liberian ECU coins you see all over the place on eBay, right?

ecu is the name for an old French coin
ECU is by coincidence the acronym made from the initials of the modern European Currency Unit
So no connection
