Hello!

Wth does this mean?

I've been adding my coin collection on Numista for weeks, in alphabetical order by issuer. Right now, I'm working on France, and I have to say that, so far, I find their coin catalog to be the most irritating of all. In far too many cases, there is a lack of sufficient explanation to help distinguish between variants, types, and subtypes.. 😑

Probably better to ask on the French site as it seems to have been added there. They show different catalog numbers.

And yes, it's horrible to have that without explanation.

😲😲

I thought Numista had a unified catalog, and that changing the language was just that: the same catalog, different language.

What is the point of having different catalogs, beyond just the translation?

Simple, Numista started as a purely French site and English was added after, leading to two editing languages. All other languages only get autotransltions of the English side or if that's empty the French side.

Similar to Wikipedia, not ideal but that's how it is. Most of the time the English side of catalog pages will have the better descriptions etc. (as most referees are not French) and the French users might have a similar experience that you have in French majority interest catalog regions.

The “différents” are the cornucopia and mint engraver's marks. From my not great French, it seems like the large head type had these marks placed higher beside the date, and they were moved lower for the small head type, with the exception of some 1947 and all 1947-B coins. The hybrid coin uses the small head obverse and older reverse with the marks higher.

From my collection:

1947 (large head, marks high)

1947-B (small head, marks high (hybrid))

1948 (small head, marks low)

That's completely correct. You can find more information here: https://fr.numista.com/forum/topic84324.html

At first I had problems too with the “hybrid” thing, because we (not French speaking people) normally just call this a mule. In this case the obverse of the new small head with the reverse of the older big head where the marks are placed a bit higher.
