Hello, and I hope you are well!
My request is to separate the Indonesian “Sultanate of Jambi” issuer into its three proper parts. In history, three different states with the name “Jambi” existed around the same time, but all with different areas of territory and circulating currency.
The first:
Name: Sultanate of Jambi
Coins: N#106793, N#344021, N#107479, N#107537, more not on Numista yet
Map Location: Indonesia
Predecessors: “Srivijaya”
Successors: “Netherlands East Indies"
Related States: “Upper Jambi”, “Lower Jambi”
Introduction: The Sultanate of Jambi was a Malay Islamic kingdom located on the eastern coast of Sumatra, in present-day Indonesia, that rose to prominence through trade along the Batanghari River. Influenced by regional powers such as the Malacca Sultanate, Jambi became an important center for commerce, particularly in pepper and gold. Its strategic position made it a key participant in regional trade networks before eventually falling under Dutch colonial control.
The second:
Name: Upper Jambi (Hulu)
Coins: N#107471, N#370280, N#370165
Map Location: Indonesia
Predecessors: “Sultanate of Jambi”
Successors: “Sultanate of Jambi”, “Netherlands East Indies"
Related States: “Lower Jambi”
Introduction: Upper Jambi or “Hulu” was a breakaway state developed during the Dutch partition of Jambi. When the Jambi throne passed on to Sultan Ingalaga's eldest son Kiai Geḍé (r. 1687–1719), Pangeran Pringgabaya established a breakaway court some time before 1691 in upstream Jambi. Pringgabaya was able to obtain patronage from the highly esteemed Pagaruyung court of Minangkabau who bestowed upon him the title ‘Sri Maharaja Batu Johan Pahlawan Syah’. Upper and Lower Jambi were reunited after 1770, bringing the Jambi Sultanate back.
The third:
Name: Lower Jambi (Hilir)
Coins: N#370236
Map Location: Indonesia
Predecessors: “Sultanate of Jambi”
Successors: “Sultanate of Jambi”, “Netherlands East Indies"
Related States: “Upper Jambi”
Introduction: Lower Jambi was a temporary rump state of the Sultanate of Jambi, during it's period of division. This half of the former unified sultanate was supported by the Dutch, and would not be reunified with Upper Jambi until after 1770.
Indonesia
----- Indonesian States
---------- Sultanate of Jambi
--------------- Sultanate of Jambi
--------------- Upper Jambi (Hulu)
--------------- Lower Jambi (Hilir)
These three states were very much different polities. Here is Zeno's breakdown of Jambi: https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=5233
All three had different territorial claims (Hulu & Hilir ruled separate areas that did not overlap), and all three independently issued coins specifically for their territories. It is my firm opinion that these should be made issuers and NOT ruling authorities.
