May be that “February 20th, 1834” was the date of birth / baptism of “S.B.E.D.” ?

A personal, private inscription valuable only for the person concerned (or its heirs).  In numismatic terms unfortunately = PMD. 

(In any case, whoever made that inscription was a professional with good tools and beautiful handwriting.)

 Also in those days the UK coins had no denomination on 

them so only the diameter would show which it was.
