Help identifying and and verifying authenticity of Roman, Bronze folis [επιλυμένο]

3 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 52 φορές

Hello,

I’d appreciate any help confining the attribution and authenticity of this coin.

It came with the following description:

“Roman Empire – Constantine II as Caesar, struck c. 324–326 CE. Bronze follis, 2.8 g, 18 mm. Obverse: laureate bust of Constantine. Reverse: city gate with two turrets and a star above.  – R#8694, #200.”

The seller described also described it as “uncirculated condition, beautiful example.”

These are the measurements I took.

thickness = 1.64mm

diameter = 17.79mm

weight = 2.84gm

non-magnetic

Does this attribution look correct?  Also, based on the photos, does the coin appear genuine, or do you see any signs that it might be a fake?

Thank you for your time and knowledge.

I'm not sure which catalogue or reference work the numbers “R#8694, #200” refer to. However, I can tell you that your coin is of type RIC VII Rome 289, which was indeed minted in 326. The obverse shows Constantine II, but was minted under Constantine I.

The diameter of your coin is on the smaller side, but still within range. Weight seems fine. I don't see any obvious sign of forgery. In any case, it's a common coin type. The Nummus Bible Database has 50 examples of this type.

Thank you
