Inconsistent obverse/reverse on Libyan coins [επιλυμένο]

6 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 70 φορές

I found some ambiguities about which side is the obverse on the latest Libyan coins. Before 2014 the issuer is only on one side of the coin and these are correctly cataloged. However, the 2014 and 2017 issues have the issuer on both sides (in English and in Arabic respectively). The corresponding Numista FAQ is not very helpful what to do in this case.

To make this worse, the coins in this new series are cataloged differently. For the 50 and 100 dirhams, the denomination side is the obverse while the ¼, ½ and 1 dinars are the opposite.

This is quite messy and to fix this I suggest that the 50 and 100 dirhams should be flipped, to make their denominations the reverse. At least that would be in line with the other coins.
Or if it is preferred to make the obverse the side where the issuer is in the native language, then the ¼, ½ and 1 dinars should be flipped.

I allways consider the side were the denomination is to be the obverse.
The denomination is actually what makes a coin, a coin isn't?

Not really. In everyday usage that's the more important part, sure. But deciding which is the obverse or reverse is independent from the denomination. The obverse should be where the issuer is (name/portrait/coat-of-arms of the country/king/emperor/central bank, etc.). The problem is that the new Libyan coins have the Central Bank on both sides.

That should not be a problem.
Just keep the denomination side as the obverse.
As simple as something, this rule applies for every coin, imo.

That would mean changing every single Libyan coins except two. I don't want to do that, beside it's not what's in the Numista guideline.

Plus what about those coins where the denomination is on both sides, like Mauritania?

Whether it is Numista's guideline or not, for me the denomination-side is the obverse.
Everybody is, offcourse, free to do his/her collection on the way he/she likes best.
I collect for over 30 years and this is most logic to me.
About, for example Mauritania, the side with the denomination in ‘Western’-figures is the obverse,
  at least in my system.
