Help Identifying Two Ottoman Empire Coins

5 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 98 φορές

Hello everyone,

I’m hoping someone here can help me identify two coins that have been passed down through my family for generations. They appear to be from the Ottoman Empire, but I don’t know much about their origin, value, or historical significance.

These coins have great sentimental value to me, and I’d really appreciate any help in learning more about them—such as the time period they’re from, the ruler featured, the mint location, or the denomination.

Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge!

Best regards,

You could search by year. Arabic (Hijri calendar) year filters most of Western stuff out.

1327 ١٣٢٧ - N#20157

other denominations are similar, but I think obverse is for 100 kurus

1277 ١٢٧٧ - N#143197

your image is in higher resolution than numista has.

I can't read Arabic, but I only had to go through three pages of search results to find them.

The coins bear the Arabic mintname as Konstantinyye, only the western world called it Constantinople, in a similar way Persia was always called Iran to the people who lived there.

Thank you so much for the helpful reply and for pointing me toward the right direction using the Hijri dates — I really appreciate it!

I did try searching through some listings (including Numista), but to be honest, many of the coins look very similar to my untrained eye, and I’m still not fully confident about which exact coins I have. I don’t read Arabic either, which makes it a bit trickier.

From what I gather, one of them might be a 100 kurus (1327 / ١٣٢٧), and someone has already offered me €1,000, and another person even said €2,500 — which is a big difference! So I’m trying to better understand what a fair price range might be.

For the other coin (possibly a 50 kurus), I don’t have any offers yet — I’d greatly appreciate any idea of its realistic value.

Thanks again for your time and insight!

You did not tell size and weight. I did tell you that I can't read Arabic and other denominations are similar.

If 50 kurus description is right, what I though was “50 kurus” is actually telling regnal year. 1277 is when sultan's rule started. Other character tells when coin was issued. Weight and measure your coins and check which denominations match, if your understanding of Arabic is similar to mine.

Looks like your sentiments got the price.
