North Yemen has a 1/40th Riyal and a 1/80th Riyal dated on the coins as A.H. 1367, but everybody attributes them to A.D. 1956. I tried two different date conversion websites and both gave me A.D. 1947 as the approximate equivalent of A.H. 1367.

What am I doing wrong? Or were the dies dated incorrectly?

Also, Numista attributes these to the Beirut Mint, a.k.a. SOMP, which did strike coins for the Republic of Lebanon dated 1954 and 1955. What is the basis for this attribution of these two North Yemen coins to SOMP? I see nothing in their style that would suggest that to me, but I admit that I know virtually nothing about them.

According to the coin pages they were issued in 1956.

N#11745

Yes, there was a new King in February of A.D. 1948, which falls within A.H. 1367, so it is an Accession date. Thank you.

I am still wondering if there is any documentation anywhere that can prove that these were struck by SOMP, a.k.a. the “Beirut Mint.”

The documentation is on the coin pages you're asking about.

I understand that the two coin pages say that  the two coins were struck at the private Beirut Mint (SOMP).  I was wondering if there was any documentation that establishes this, as it might help me determine what else they struck. I have contacted the current incarnation of SOMP about what coins they struck in the 1950's, but they have not responded.

Does anybody know of any other coins struck by the Beirut Mint (SOMP) besides the Lebanon 1954 5 Piastres and some of the 1955 10 Piastres?

Thanks.

Did you look at the linked reference or just the comment in Numista? I downloaded a screenshot of that reference (which includes the P.O. box the mint was using!). In the absence of any documentation refuting the information there I consider it proof, especially since it was published in 1963 only a few years removed from the year those coins were minted.

No, I was not aware of this. It is exactly what I needed! Thank you very much!

I did a search of the Numista site for the word “Beirut” and see no other coins struck there besides the two North Yemen pieces and the two Lebanese pieces.

I have a gold bullion piece struck there that I will post pictures of when I can get it photographed.

There are only 4 coins minted by SOMP in Numista. How do you know what you have was?

It is not a coin. It is a private bullion piece that bears the name of the founder of SOMP.

Like to see that. Are you adding it to the catalog?

I will when I can. I do not have the ability to take proper photographs myself.
