You are missing fonts in your OS. It is not original rendering in Firefox. That's Firefox “I can't find font for it” rendering.

Is it an easy fix to show them all - and in colour like I think they were displayed?

I think it might be Noto emoji font on google.
I do not know which font I am getting them from as I got handful language specific fonts installed in personal font directory and only four of them are from google. Numista might also be loading those fonts via Javascript or CSS.
