King John or Henry III? One penny

8 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 134 φορές

I can’t really tell if this is a John (as it was sold to me) or a  Henry iii. why I say henry is because with the hair detailing it has no dots like the king john does. I know there’s also types but I’m not sure how much they differ. Any help would be appreciated

From a coin like this one:

1 Penny - John Short Cross type; class 4c

I understand that even with the name ҺЄNRICVS R ЄX (i.e. Henry II) the coin might need to be attributed to John? That makes it very difficult, especially given the condition of the coin. Perhaps a specialist of English coinage can help? And does the reverse have any feature that may help to narrow down the search?

I did post the reverse so sorry about that, must’ve been a bug.

I'm sure someone on here would be able to read the name of the moneyer. I compared with the few of John's coins in the Numista catalogue, but no name seems to fit. For example, it's certainly not RAVF ON LVNDE.

They said it was a 5B type coin but I looked it up and it has no similar details in my opinion,

especially the eyes but with pennies from Henry iii it looks identical. im going to try and narrow it down

Good luck — and I still hope some of our friends and English coinage specialist on this site will have a look…

The piece is very worn and positive identification will be extremely difficult.

Having said that, I do see similarities with the Class 5b in the link above.

Also, there is a link to Rod Blunt's website, which will provide more detail.

Good luck 👍

Thank you! I’ll have a look at the website in a bit, cheers
