Hello, I recently acquired the coin below from a auction site.

Despite its high degree of wear, it is a Brazilian "X Réis" coin, with the countermark known as “Escudete”, minted on “Rio de Janeiro” and year of 1731. The countermark basically changes the value of the coin to double, for example, if it is worth 10, after receiving the stamp, it becomes worth 20.

When I tried to search here, I noticed that the coins from this period are divided into sections for “Brasil”, “Angola” and the other portuguese colonies. This makes searching quite difficult, as some use Roman numerals and others conventional numerals. In addition, there are duplicate pieces for “Brasil” and colonies.

Here some examples.

The same coin, made in “Brasil”, but used in "Angola" and “São Tomé e Princípe”.

Angola

N#351080

Brazil

N#78444

N#38080

"São Tome e Príncipe"

N#103013

Example of Countermarked 40 Reis

N#88957

N#186132

I know it's a lot of work, but it could be solved by unifying all coins that are the same type into one. Simply because it's practically impossible to determine whether the coins where intended to use on Brazil or to the other colonies.

If it is not possible to merge. Another way, which is probably the easiest, would be to edit the title of all these duplicates, standardize the reference numbers for the same KM, a portuguese catalog and also a Brazilian reference catalog, such as Bentes or Amato. And leave these similar ones in "See also" of each coin.
