The obverse/reverse alignment for Edward VII 10 cent coins

10 Cents - Edward VII - Newfoundland – Numista

is listed as “coin alignment”. This matches what is in the version of the Charlton Catalog of Canadian Coins that I own (2009  version). Note that what Numista calls “alignment”, Charlton calls “die axis”.

I have 1903 and 1904H dated coins from this series and both are “medal alignment.”

It seems odd that a respected catalog for Canadian coins like the Chalton would contain such a major error, but it gets worse:

For the Newfoundland 5 cents Edward VII coins, Charlton says: 1903 and 1904H have coin alignment and 1909 has medal alignment. Numista has all of these coins as medal alignment, and the only one I own (1903) has medal alignment.

For the Newfoundland 20 cent Edward VII coins, Charlton says all have coin alignment; Numista says all have medal alignment, and the one example I own (1904H) has medal alignment.

For the Newfoundland 50 cent Edward VII coins, Charlton says both coin and medal alignments exist; Numista says all of these coins should have medal alignment, and the three examples I own (1907, 1908, and 1909) all have medal alignment.

I think all of the silver Edward VII Newfoundland coins have medal alignment, in which case the Numista webpage for the 10 cent coin needs to be corrected.

Does anyone have a Newfoundland Edward VII silver coin with coin alignment?

No E8 silver or copper with coin alignment in my collection.

My Victoria copper have medal alignment and Victoria silver have coin alignment. All the coins I have from later monarchs are medal alignment.

Coinsandcanada (https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices-provinces.php) says sometimes something else:

5 cents 1903 + 1904:

Numista: coin alignment

Charlton: coin alignment

Coinsandcanada: coin alignment

5 cents 1908:

Numista: coin alignment

Charlton: medal alignment

Coinsandcanada: medal alignment

10 cents 1903 + 1904:

Numista: coin alignment

Charlton: coin alignment

Coinsandcanada: coin alignment

20 cents 1904:

Numista: medal alignment

Charlton: coin alignment

Coinsandcanada: medal alignment

50 cents 1904 + 1907 + 1908 + 1909:

Numista: medal alignment

Charlton: coin + medal alignment (I don't have a Charlton, so when you say in your editon of Charlton coin and medal alignment exists, is that for all 4 dates, or do you mean some dates have coin alignment while other dates have medal alignment?)

Coinsandcanada: medal alignment

For the 10 cents 1903 + 1904 and the 5 cents 1903 all three catalogs say these are coin alignment, very strange you have these three coins in medal alignment.

When there is a difference in alignment within the same type I'm not so sure Numista is the most reliable source. That could explain the difference between Numista and the two other catalogs for the 5 cents 1908.

No idea why there's a difference between Charlton and the two others for the 20 and 50 cents.

The Charlton Catalog uses a symbol of two arrows pointing up to indicate medal alignment, and a symbol of two arrows, one pointing up and one pointing down, to indicate coin alignment. It calls this coin characteristic “die axis” rather than “alignment.”

Regarding the 5 cent coins, it lists 1903 and 1904 with the coin alignment symbol, and beneath that it shows “1909” with the medal alignment symbol.

Obviously, “1909” is an error in the catalog, because this series of coins for Newfoundland was only minted in 1903, 1904 and 1908.

For the 50 cent coins, after the words “die axis” the Charlton Catalog has both the coin alignment and the medal alignment symbols with no further explanation. Thus, it is unclear if it is implying all four dates have a mixture of both alignments, or just some of the dates have a mixture of both alignments, or that some dates are all one alignment, and some dates are all the other alignment. The value table for these coins in the Charlton Catalog does not have pricing information for two alignments for any of the four dates, so that suggests each date has only one alignment (but it doesn't indicate which have which, like it does for the 5 cent coins).

If it helps - all of the 1904 Edward VII Newfoundland coins were struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, UK; all other dates were struck at the Royal Mint in London, UK.

As I indicated, none of my Edward VII silver Newfoundland coins have coin alignment; all have medal alignment.

Does anyone out there own a coin from any of those series that has coin alignment?
