At first sight, it's a plain Roman coin with a rather uninteresting reverse since the SC letters are often placed on each side of a figure or design of some sort. These letters just mean “by decree of the Senate” (senatus consulto). BUT … …
The obverse is quite interesting because it shows Tiberius' son, Drusus. Thereby, it can be argued that Tiberius was making a dynastic claim for his own family that was going against his adoptive father Augustus' wish. Augustus was the fist emperor (-30/27—+14; he was succeeded by Tiberius, whom he adopted as his son since his own heirs had all died. In his will, he wanted Tiberius to become emperor until Germanicus, the husband of his granddaughter, would be of age, with military experience.
The legend of the obverse reads and translates:
- DRVSVS CAESAR TIberii AVGustii Filius, DIVI AVGusti Nepos
- Drusus Caesar, son of Tiberius son of Augustus, grandson of the Divine Augustus
In the Roman frame of mind, being a descendant of someone by adoption was just as good as by birth when stating who your ancestors were. The representation of Drusus on coins, among other things, gave rise to rumors that Tiberius had ordered the murder of Germanicus —the heir that Augustus wanted on the throne if he had lived— to the benefit of Tiberius' own son, Drusus. Germanicus was fighting wars and was killed. The story is told by an unreliable but very entertaining source, the Roman historian Tacitus.
In the end, Drusus died before he could reach the throne. Gaius (often called “Caligula” informally) succeeded Tiberius and this was in line with Augustus' plan since he was the son of Germanicus. Of course, he turned out not to be an ideal emperor…
EDIT — Oh, your identification (which I had not looked at when I wrote the above) is wrong. Here it is in the catalogue.
