The many 2020 25 cents steel proofs has been tag “removed” on the article, but the Royal Canadian mint has released the Numis-tastic! 5-coin Set in 2020 that includes many steel proof coins.

This set has the following coin:

- 2020 25 cents Brilliant Uncirculated

- 2020 25 cents Proof

- 2020 25 cents Matte Proof

- 2020 25 cents Reverse Proof

- 2020 25 cents Specimen

Is there any reason why the steel proofs were removed?

Yes, this is good question. I have this set too and I see that I have all three coins that are marked as “proof to be removed”.

I guess all proof versions should be kept as each are optically different.

@StoneTemple123 what do you think about as a Canada coins referee?

I also see what the OP means.  I don't have a definitive answer, only a theory as to what happened.  That specific Numista catalog page was set up for the type "Standard Circulating Coins".  However, the 3 proofs in that set are not circulating coins.  So I "think" what happened is that someone initially inserted those 3 coins onto that page for "Standard Circulating Coins".  But perhaps they realized later that the proof coins should actually be moved to a different Numista catalog page of type "Non-circulating coins".  However, I can't find those 3 proof coins listed anywhere on Numista.  That's just my guess as to what happened.  If someone else knows, feel free to comment.

Notes:

  • My copy of the Haxby/Wiley Canadian catalog (2024) documents the entire 5 coin set under "Collector Coins/Non-Precious Metals", page 154.
  • My copy of the Charlton Canadian catalog (2024) documents these 5 coins under the Volume 2 spiral bound book (which is reserved for Collector coins only).  The entire 5 coin set is described as an "education piece" (to teach people about all of the different Mint finishes from shiny to Matte), pages 96-97

Apologies I can't be more helpful.

No, in Numista it works in different way. If the coin has two or more variants and at least one is in circulation, the type is “ standard/or commemorative circulation coin”. This happens very often with the circulation coins that are avaliable also in BU or proof sets. So type is circulation even the BU and proofs variants are not intended to circulate.

Thanks for the explanation.

Here's another thought.  When the referee for Canada typed the words  “*no steel proofs removed*” on those year lines, I wonder if he actually meant to type the words “non-steel proofs removed” since there is a separate catalog page for silver proofs for 2020:  N#33969

This doesn't explain where the steel proofs are located, I suppose.  But I'm just wondering why those words were chosen too.

Well, there are three lines tagged “removed” and there are three proof missing (normal, matte and reverse).

I think the lines removed were the steel proofs.
