Unknown Diocletian Coin [επιλυμένο]

Hi everyone, this will be a simple identification of this coin. I know it is from the time of Diocletian and I know it is Roman, the trouble is that there doesn't seem to be an exact match for this coin. Closest was found here: N#200258

The coin is around 28mm in diameter and is a copper/bronze coin. The trouble is that the reverse markings are slightly different.

Hope this helps

I think you found the correct coin. Yours just has a Γ, gamma = third, officina mark instead of B, beta = second.

I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.

So is there any record of this coin that has a different date or is it just a different officina?

Different officina, same issue.

RIC dates the issue to c. 301 CE.

I do think the notes on the denomination on the page you linked to originally are just wrong though.  On the previous washed silver issue denominations initiated under Aurelian, where the XXI mark was first used, there are sometimes rare corresponding coins with an XI mark that are clearly supposed to be double the value of the XXI coins.  That shows that they should be read as 1/20th (and 1/10th for XI), so imo it is more likely that on your coin it means that it is 5% silver or worth 1/20th of the solid silver coin we have stumbled into calling an argenteus.

Gotcha so should I simply change the data on the page or should I look for the argentus you mentioned?

I don't feel that I am enough of an authority to go around changing anyone's catalog entry.  Someone turning to RIC would see discussion on denominations with similar arguments.  But that volume of RIC was published in 1967 and they don't seem to have noticed the connection to the earlier XI coinage (which was issued under Aurelian's system, reformed in turn by Diocletian).

I just wanted to point out that the opinion presented there is disputed, at least.
