I have a George V & Mary 1911 Jubilee medal. The portraits are facing right, but all of the medals I see are facing left. Is it unusual to have the heads facing right?
It was common place to give out commemorative 'medals' during the latter part of the 1800's and early part of the last century, either for significant events or for social achievements. It was a bit like the coloured rubber bracelets we get nowadays, or the pin badges people wear to show they've sponsored a charity or event (i.e. UK Poppy Appeal badges). Mintage seems to be lost in the mists of time, but suffice to say that there are ‘many’ of these medals still around. Yours is unusual in that KG V faces right, although my Truro medal (327549) has KE VII facing right too - so, not rare. Value at auction is difficult to pin down, as these often act as stocking fillers (to use a seasonal term) in mixed lots, but we're talking pennies or maybe a few pounds at most (but you've got to find that person who really, really wants it first).
