Mansfeld-Friedeburg Taler 1604 - genuine?

6 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 142 φορές

Hi,

I'm mostly involved in exonumia, but wondered if I could canvas opinion about a coin I was bequeathed.

I've identified the coin as:

N#254037

and attached photos below.

I have a couple of questions:

The coin came with a family escaping the Nazis to the UK in 1940, before that I don't know its provenance, but I believe it had been with them since the 19th century. My question is does it look genuine to you?

Secondly, the coin was made into a brooch at some point, and there are still 2 areas of solder on the obverse at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock. Assuming it is genuine, does it still retain some value?

Many thanks

Simon

It looks genuine to me.  Can you meaure the weight?

Yes, it still has numismatic value.  A number of these thalers can be found in auctions with this type of damage.

Thank you for your comments. The weight comes in at 28.85g

I have just noticed that my coin has an additional letter in the obverse lettering.

The listed coin:

N#254037

obverse lettering ends with “P :”, whereas mine (images in first post) ends “PA :”

Should I submit it as a variant, or just add a note to the existing coin?

Thanks

Simon

Small differences in the lettering are typical of this era.

I can find other examples with PA, listed as the same Davenport type (6947), so you could add something in the Comments section of the existing listing if you want.
