Organizing adding Roman imperial coins by mint and material

2 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 51 φορές

Hey, some time ago I took on the task of adding a few coins from the OCRE/ RIC catalogue here. Then I started working on the Nicomedia mint.

I started with the gold coins and then with the silver coins. As you can see in the catalogue, all gold and silver coins from Nicomedia should now be in the catalogue.

My suggestion would therefore be (only if the Numista team agrees) to organise the adding here.

Here are two examples of how I created the contributions. I also provide various sources/help here.

OCRE/ RIC catalogue: https://numismatics.org/ocre/results

Here you can then select the filter for different mints and then the desired material. Then you can get started. e.g. it looks like this:

https://numismatics.org/ocre/results?q=material_facet%3A%22Gold%22+AND+mint_facet%3A%22Nikomedia%22

Here are three more examples of my contributions, so that you can orientate yourselves by them:

N#392235

N#392357

N#389904

What you need to look out for:

  • See if the page you want to add already exists
  • The authority specified in OCRE is the ruling authority on Numista.
  • You have to add both references (RIC (number) and OCRE (e.g. ric.6.nic.1) for RIC 6 Nicomedia 1)
  • The person named in the portrait is indicated at the top of the name. (Like the three coins above)
  • The officinas (You can compare the ones from the Constans coin or in the link below the listing here.) The Officinas belong in the comment field
  • The standard mint letter(s) belong(s) in the mint letter field next to the mint, e.g. SMN for Nicomedia
  • For the years you have to click “no date” and then add the year(s)
  • The structure of the name field above looks like this: Denomination - portrait person (lettering of the reverse; mint)

Here some links to help you:

If no example is given on OCRE (so the diameter and weight is missing) you can look up the standard weight of the specific coin here:

So here the list of the mints already added (I would update this list when another one is ready.)

Nicomedia:

  • gold: ✅
  • silver: ✅
  • billon:
  • bronze:
Referee for coins from Roman provinces, Western/ Eastern Roman Empire, Roman Imperial usurpations

Most Roman Empire entries on Numista were imported from OCRE with a script anyway, but just up until some RIC volume. I never understood why that wasn't done for the rest as well. Seems way easier than basically copying it by hand. I mean, the process is obviously already there.
