French coin with a chopmark, New France? [επιλυμένο]

I am looking for information about this chopmark at this Douzain.

I was told, that it might be a lily and this coin could have been used in the French colony of New France (North America).

Sadly numista does not show chopmarked coins from New France and I didn't find much information online.

Do you agree that it was probably used in New France and the chopmark shows a lily?

Any information is highly welcome.

Thanks a lot!

(PS: I also made a post about the Douzain wihtout the chopmark as a coin of France, because I think this type is missing at numista, if you are interested: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic139168.html )

hello it could be a DOUZAIN countermarked for New France but difficult to judge in photos, perhaps compare here

Hi,

looks like a DOUZAIN counterarked to become a QUINZAIN under Louis XIII: N#37353

The countermark has been a bit too hard.

Not meant specifically for colonies, but could have been there maybe?

Thanks a lot!

So it definitly is a countermark to change the value to 15 Deniers, but we can't really say if it was still used in France or in French colonies?

Why was the value changed from 12 Deniers to 15 Deniers?

Yes we can, it was used in France. Maybe also colonies, but not sure about that.

Why was the value changed from 12 Deniers to 15 Deniers?

The monetary system has been reformed in 1640-1641, because too much foreign and old feudals coins were circulating in France at that time. A royal ordinance of June 1640 stated that the royal douzains (=12 deniers) would worth 15 deniers (=quinzain) with a countermark (the lily in a beaded oval), within a 2 month delay. Then non coutermarked douzains would be illegal and had to be confiscated. Things didn't went as planed: they were a lot of fake counterstamps, counterstamps on foreign and feudal coins… and so much non countermarked coins still circulating in 1644 that they finally decided that all douzains, counterstamped or not, would worth 15 deniers! (source)

Fun fact: Paris' mint minted in 1641 a new type of 15 deniers which includes the counterstamp in its design: N#37354

Thank you very much, this are all the informations I wanted to know, I really learned a lot!
