Hello,
I would like to request the addition of a new issuer for the Roman provinces. It needs a new parent too
Thank you
- the name of the issuer in English (and if possible also in French and Spanish)
En: Iulia Pia Paterna, Colonia of
Fr: Iulia Pia Paterna, Colonie de
Sp: Iulia Pia Paterna, Colonia de
It should be under Roman Provinces > Africa Zeugitana > Iulia Pia Paterna
a.k.a: Paterna
- its Wikidata code (for example, Q854 for Sri Lanka)
Q122394883
- if they already exist in the catalogue, the link of one or more Numista records that you want to classify under this issuer
- if possible, a brief introduction presenting the history of this issuer with any numismatic considerations useful to the reader
Iulia Pia Paterna was a Roman colonia in the Cap Bon peninsula in the province of Zeugitana, in modern-day Tunisia. It was probably established during the life of Julius Caesar, and it is only known by this name from coinage. It may be identified as the city of Clypea/Kelibia (Colonia Iulia Clipea), Carpi (Colonia Iulia Carpitana), Curubis (Colonia Iulia Curubis), or Neapolis (Colonia Iulia Neapolis).
Coins were minted in Paterna during the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius. Two series were minted under Augustus, in two denominations, possibly a sestertius and a dupondius or an as. The coinage of Tiberius is more prolific. Three series were issued in three denominations, probably sestertii, dupondii, and asses. The presence of the names of the proconsuls on the reverse dates the coins of Tiberius to AD 20/21–23.
