I brought this coin from Iraq some 15 years ago. I was told it is Persian, but I've no way of knowing for sure.

Would any of you fine folks be able to identify it?

The coin weighs 1.34 grams, the diameter is 16-17mm, thickness is 1mm.

Much appreciate it.

Looks like an Ilkhan coin, something like this example:

But you forgot the diameter and weight.

Providing weight and diameter would be helpful in identifying it. I am not ruling out Mongol states as well as possibly Persian.

Sorry Geison, you responded while I was researching and typing. I was looking at this one.

Apologies, the coin weighs (on my kitchen scale) 1 gram, the diameter is 16-17mm, thickness is 1mm.

I think it is around Taghay Timur too, good guess, I should search the Numista Catalog before Zeno, Numista is doing a very good job in older coins

I see the similarities in the coin examples you provided, but there is a significant difference--the lettering on my coin is convex, it stands above the surface, while on your examples the letters are pushed into the metal. I'm sure there are proper numismatic terms for the two styles, but I don't know it.

It is just optical illusion.

Please understand that a kitchen scale is more suited for weighing potatoes, not coins, and your coin is very worn and difficult to read the finer  details to specifically identify exactly what you have  as well as keeping in mind that these reference catalogs are a work in progress and not complete. I think we can most certainly say it is from the Mongol Empire state of Ilkhanate or “Ilkan” consisting of much of the middle East including much of modern day Iran and Iraq.. Justifying the Iranian reference by those you purchased the coin from. I believe your example was minted in Bagdad. Please review the following, some of them come close although are not specifically your coin. Most likely a 2 Dirham coin.

Alright, you have successfully shamed me into buying a micro scale. The coin weighs 1.34 grams. It does appear to be in line with the 2 dirham coin.

Follow-up question--besides relying on the coin weight and diameter, how can you tell what it is?

I saw that you were able to tell what mint it was. What was the indication of it?

Simply by the way your coin more closely matches the coin from the Bagdad mint in appearance. Again, not exactly your coin but this gives us a direction to better research and zero in on your exact coin.

Same dates, same denomination, but entirely different styling and appearance by respective mint. Focus on the star for instance. Bagdad more linear.  Tustar more rounded.

Would you suggest some resources for further research?

As Geison eluded to earlier, Zeno is a little more comprehensive for these type coins at this time.  Documenting these ancient coins is a work in progress for most catalogs. Start at home page, go to Islamic world, type in a keyword such as “Ilkhan” and you get the following results. I did not have the time to go through them to find a better match. Give it a try. We now have the diameter and weight to be fairly certain that it  is a 2 Dirham. An accurate scale helps immensely, now you know why.
