Old coin ID

Hello, I've been trying unsuccessfully to ID an old coin. Found 4 weeks ago in Biharia, Romania while weeding in mom's garden. About 16-17 mm diameter, very thin. I tried to clean it up a bit but not much success...and being so thin, i don't want to break it. Any idea, anyone? Thank you

It is a solidus (schilling) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Vilnius mint. N#126670

If you rotate your first photo 180 degrees, you will see the design is crown above two shields, and word SOLIDVS from 1:00 - 5:00.

The mintmaster's mark of two arrows at 6:00 can be used to identify the approximate date, 1615-1620.

If you rotate photo 4 by 90 degrees clockwise, you will see the S monogram, with numeral 1 on the left.  The numeral on the right of the monogram will complete the date, but I cannot see it.

Edit:  If you open the Numista listing, and scroll down to Kop 3432, Punch 1 to Punch 3, you will coins that look like yours, so maybe it is 1615.

Wow. Thank you so much. Mystery solved, i guess.

Just another thing…is there any way to clean it a bit to make details more obvious? I must confess i did try to clean it a bit but it's very thin and i don't want to break it or rub it too much.

Thank you

I do not clean old coins like this, but I also do not find them in my garden!

You can try soaking it in some distilled water and gently using a swab to remove surface dirt.  The green deposits are probably a type of corrosion (verdigris) that can not be removed.

This type is not valuable, so you do not have any risk to decrease the value by attempting to clean it (though many collectors will never advise you to clean a coin).

Thank you for your time. I would just like to see a bit more of the coin under all that layer. I'm just fascinated by it. We've had that garden since 1984, parents planted veggies in it ever since and it's the first time to find something like this. I wonder what else is down there.

Thanks again👍

I wonder how the coin came to Romania?

Around 1620, Polish armies were fighting the Ottoman armies not far away away from you.   Maybe it arrived in the pocket of a Polish soldier?

Hmm, i guess we'll never know. I hope that soldier did not have a tragic end and is lying somewhere in my mom's garden. My sister in law also said her family found a couple of solidus coins a long time ago. Different garden, though.
