I think it depends on the cause of the die “error.” If the error occurs when cutting the die (example: letter “v” rather than letter “w”) then yes, it's a true variety and should be documented with its own year line. If the error occurs from die deterioration (cracks, chips, wear, etc.) then no, it's a variation from normal but not a true variety and should not be documented with its own year line. Die deterioration occurs over time and few coins from that die will be identical. However, documenting them in the comments section makes sense if it's a variation that occurs on many coins.
