Before someone ask, from the new guidelines :

Include the issuing ruler’s name in the title only if the ruler’s name, monogram, effigy, or personal coat of arms are present on the coin.

and

For commemorative coins, a brief description of the subject should be included in brackets.

Words such as “anniversary”, “commemoration”, “celebration”, and the dates should not be in the title.

Any comments about what the title of this coin should be ?

Ancienement, référent du Canada /  FYI former referee for Canada

Merci, Québécois,

Here is the description in yesterday's Canada Gazette:

(b) the reverse impression is to depict, on the inner core of the coin, a polar bear standing at the edge of an ice floe surrounded by water and other ice floes, with the artist’s initials “BT” on the lower righthand side of the ice floe on which the polar bear is standing, and, centred at the top of the black outer ring, two virtual images of a maple leaf between two slanted lines, and at the bottom of the black outer ring, two security marks consisting of a maple leaf within a maple leaf, each within a circle, with the number “2” between the two circles and with the inscriptions “CANADA” and “DOLLARS” to the left and right of the circles, respectively;

The coin came out the same day as the Gazette, which is unusual. Since the Gazette is issued on a regular schedule, I suppose the Mint new and matched the date of issue of the coin at the earliest possible date, i.e. December 7th.

Our messages “crisscrossed”…

I almost said in my previous message that I was happy to see, in the right panel, the actual issuing authority, i.e. Charles III ─ whatever one thinks of the monarchy since here I care about reality and history.

As for the title, here is the official cause of issue (Canada Gazette):

  • The Royal Canadian Mint (the Mint) wishes to produce a coloured $2 circulation coin honouring Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign.
  • La Monnaie royale canadienne (la Monnaie) souhaite produire une pièce de circulation commémorative de deux dollars dont le motif rendrait hommage au règne de la reine Elizabeth II.

Does this help?

I would love to get one for my collection.

As so often with our circulating commemoratives, it looks like they're grabbed as they are issued. I doubt I will ever see one in circulation. I haven't yet seen a single circulating commem for 2022.

It’s a beautiful coin with a black outer ring

There seems to be mixed reactions to the esthetics of this coin, but it's in line with the tradition of a black frame for mourning. See for example these “covers” (as philatelists call them):

Reviving an old thread. Why does the Canada 2022 Black Ring $2 coin not have a KM#?

There is this from six years ago

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic95665.html

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

That is interesting. However, I find it strange that subsequent years in 2024 and 2025 had KM numbers assigned, just not this one from 2022.
