Canada 1$ / New Zealand 50c Mule

8 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 157 φορές

Just discovered newly added coin (Canada): N#341846

And it looks that this is exactly the same coin as (New Zealand): N#118260

I guess one of them should be removed as there are duplicates.

What is the rule about which one should be kept and which removed? Which side determinate the position of this coin in the catalogue: obverse (in this case New Zealand)?

Looking at the description, it seems that this mule coin is listed in Krauze under separate KM number for New Zealand only (KM#95). on the other side, the alloy used is the one used for Canadian dollar at the time (nickiel).

What do you thing about? Or maybe should both be kept?

The 1985 Canadian 1 Dollar Mule with the New Zealand 50 Cents obverse is a pretty well-known coin - but all known examples were found in Canada only.

Aidan.

The coin is listed in the Charlton catalog (of Canadian coins). What issuer does that catalog list of the coin? (If it says Canada we have a catalog tie as Krause says New Zealand.)

Personally I would say New Zealand as that's the country on the Obverse. (The Obverse from the Canadian view is the side with the queen.)

Whichever one remains should have both the Krause and Charlton reference numbers.

The Canadian entry says the coin was created by the Royal Canadian Mint. Is that known or just assumed?

I live in New Zealand - & can confirm that this coin has never been seen in New Zealand.

It was struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg.

Aidan.

Why not keep it in both with a cross reference to the other one?

I agree. We should find a way to “CATALOG” it (or at least cross reference it) in both countries catalog in case there are coins in circulation in both country. The goal should be to inform and get the collectors to open their eyes for this kind of MULES, now and in the futur.

Maybe catalogue the NZ one as https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces118260nz.html

Then catalogue the Canadian one as https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces118260ca.html

I wrote Pejounet about this case and he will propose something to Xavier, let's wait. Meanwhile I did the cross reference you proposed in the link section .
