I have very little knowledge of coins like this and only when sellers offer some starting point for my research.
This coin was in a bulk lot of supposed tokens and I have no idea where it could have originated. It is non-magnetic and extremely thin.
Weight is 1.145g and diameter 20.66mm. I tried a search on Maltese cross but can't really make out much more. I tried what I think should be the clearest scan setting but perhaps another setting could work better. I also have no good idea of obverse and reverse and top and bottom.
I would appreciate any information on the coin's origin. Thank you, Will
If you take your first photo and rotate it 180 degrees, I think I see this legend:
⚜ SIT (NOME) DNI BENEDICTV (Blessed be the name of the Lord)
I am pretty sure this legend was used on French medieval coins, and I know it was used on Low Countries coins (where the fleur-de-lis can signify the Bruges mint, but probably there are other places that used this in the legend).
And I'm not sure I would call this a Maltese cross, which has a more pronounced notch in each end of the cross. There are objects in the corners of the cross, but I can't see what they are.
Let's see what can be found...
On your second photo (the obverse) I think I can see ... VDOV ... at 6:00 - 8:00 the way the photo is currently oriented, which could be part of LVDOVICVS, the king's name.
By the time I wake up tomorrow, one of our European members will have solved it
On the side with the cross, always wondered what the items in each quarter were -
now looks like alternating fleur-de-lis then a crown. Such as:
France, Louis XI (1461-83), silver Blanc a la couronne, second issue (January 1474), St Lo mint.
Obverse: + LVDOVICVS FRANCORV REX - French arms and three coronets within trilobe.
Reverse: + SIT NOME DNI BENEDICTV - cross pattée, coronet in first and third quarters, lis in second and fourth.
