Roman coins I need help to identify

7 αναρτήσεις • προβλήθηκε 82 φορές

Hello, I have 2 Roman coins I need help identifying. I believe they are both from the same time period. Unfourtunally with the second one the back is completely worn off, but I want to see if I can still get info about them anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both are about 18mm in diameter.
The first one seems to be of Constantius II as Caesar (= heir to the throne):

... CONSTANTIVS NOB C

You would need to check if I got the legend right since the photo is not clear. Constantius (if it's him) was "Caesar" until the death of Constantine "the Great" (his father) in 337. He ruled until 361 (or is it 362?).

The second one is of Constantius II, again, but as emperor, so 337 or after:

D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG

I suspect the reverse is of the FEL TEMP REPARATIO type.

Hello, Here are some more clear pics.

Edit: I took a closer look at the legend, and I can see the NOB C at the right
I forgot to say that the reverse is of the type GLORIA EXERCITVS.

I can't really read the legend on the obverse, though Constantius II seems likely. You can compare with the relevant coins in the catalogue.

If the legend on the obverse doesn't match, then it could be his elder brother, CONSTANTINVS (i.e. Constantine II); it is not his younger brother, Constans, whose name is CONSTANS in Latin without the -VS ending, so he doesn't match.

The three brothers were each titled "Caesar", i.e. heir to the throne. They took power on September 18th 337 after they massacred the branch of the family deriving from Constantine the Great's first wife. That happened in the summer of 337; Constantine had died in May.

Soon after they took power with a third each of the Empire, they started again to fight, but this time among themselves. Eventually, only Constantius II was left.

I took a look at the catalogue at all the Constantius II and Constantine II and I found 3 possibilities

I checked the lettering on my Coin and I can make out TIVS NOB C
On the back I found only 3 coins (Ones above) Which have the single standard and that match the lettering. I personally think it's the first one as below the standard I can make out the letters TS Which matches the SMTSΓ from Thessalonica.

Not 100% sure but that what I believe it is
Can't believe I forgot to say this, but thank you Camerinvs for your help. I probably wouldn't be able to figure it out otherwise lol
You're welcome.

I think you're right as for ID. And have a look at the same in Wildwinds; it's even more of a match if you compare portraits (or go to the main Constantius II page and search "224" ─ last of 8 results).
