If possible values.

Leave as is or "clean" to remove any contaminants from the surface?

I agree with Apuking, soaking overnight in acetone would likely improve its appearance.

Will do. That's my standard procedure as I don't know if it was in PVC.
My concern are about other contaminants that may be on the surface.
