Definition

Exonumia are objects of historical interest or collectable items that resemble or relate to coins and banknotes. Numista gathers multiple categories of exonumia.

When should the addition of a page in the catalogue be proposed?

If a type of exonumia is missing from the catalogue, you can add it through the dedicated form. Pages should describe only one type of exonumia, defined by its physical properties (metal composition, shape, diameter, and weight) and design (numismatic, heraldic, lettering and patterns).

It is important to check that the type you are looking for is not already present in the "coins", “banknotes”, or “exonumia” part of the site.

Similar types of exonumia are listed on a separate page only in certain cases. The same type of exonumia may include several varieties, the differences of which do not constitute the basis for the creation of a new page. Numista does not reference random variations and modern counterfeits.

Guidelines for creating or modifying a piece of exonumia

  • If the item is rigid, you can use the guidelines for coins.
  • If the item is flexible, you can use the guidelines for banknotes.
  • Fill only relevant field depending on the type of item. For example, don't specify a face value and currency for medals.
  • The field “title” should be filled as close as possible to the coins or banknotes guidelines. Start the title with the face value if the item has a face value, even if the value is not expressed in an official currency. Otherwise, start with the nature of the item, for example “Token” or “Medal”.
  • The field “location” should be filled with:
    • for fantasy coins and banknotes: the issuing state as claimed on the coin or banknote
    • for tokens circulating in a given territory: the country where they circulated (the historical country, depending on the date of the token)
      • In case the token circulated in multiple countries, no location should be specified.
    • for replicas for which the country of issuance is unknown: the issuer of the original coin
    • in all other cases: the country of the issuing entity or, if there is no clear issuing entity, the country where the item was issued (the historical country, depending on the date of the item)
  • Do not add ruling authorities if the authority is not represented directly on the item.
  • For military medals that are in the scope of Numista, pictures of the obverse and reverse should show the medal only and not any ribbon. If the medal has a ribbon, a picture with the ribbon can be added in the comment section.
