Medal - Kaolin Seilitz

The mining of kaolin in Seilitz has a long tradition. In 1750, the search for the "white earth" began on behalf of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, after Johann Friedrich Böttger and Ehrenfried Tschirnhaus had found the right recipe for making porcelain in 1709. According to legend, kaolin was discovered by chance when a worker from the factory noticed white tips on the plough while plowing his field in Seilitz. In 1763, kaolin was first mined in Seilitz - initially in open-cast mining and later in underground mining. Since 1814, the "State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen" has had the sole mining rights for the Seilitz area. Around 300 tons of raw kaolin are mined every year. The Seilitz kaolin, which is used as the main raw material for producing the porcelain mass for the world-famous "Meissen Porcelain", best meets the needs of the "State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen".
