The "Ivan Filipović Award" for lifetime achievement and annual awards for work and results in preschool education, primary, secondary education, higher education and scientific and professional work bears the name of Filipović, a teacher who was born in 1823 in Velika Kopanica and died in 1895 in Zagreb. Filipović was a school superintendent, a prolific writer, a magazine editor, a founder of the Croatian Pedagogical and Literary Association in 1871 and the Union of Croatian Teachers' Associations in 1885, and a participant in three general teachers' assemblies. In addition, due to his outstanding teaching work, his advocacy for teachers' independence and freedom and the freedom of the public school, his colleagues called him the father of teachers. His thought - If I were born ten times, I would be a teacher ten times - has been instilling hope, encouraging and encouraging all those who have chosen one of the most difficult callings in the world as their calling in life, but have remained faithful to it despite all the difficulties and challenges. The "Ivan Filipović Award" is awarded by the Republic of Croatia, namely the "Ivan Filipović Award" Committee, and is prepared by the Ministry of Science and Education, for significant achievements in the field of education and represents the highest recognition for education workers. The award has been awarded since 1964, first under the auspices of the Croatian Pedagogical and Literary Association, and then since 1967 it has become an award of the Parliament of the Republic of Croatia. In this way, the Croatian education system and society demonstrate systematic care for those who, through their expertise, dedication and exemplary work, have contributed to the improvement of the educational process and the reputation of the teaching profession. The Act on the "Ivan Filipović Award" (Official Gazette, No.: 61/91. and 149/09.) stipulates that two lifetime achievement awards and up to 15 annual awards may be awarded each year. The annual award is awarded for the most significant achievements over the past years, and especially the last, to distinguished educators, scientists and experts and to a group of scientists and experts or educators if the achievement is the result of their joint work. The Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to distinguished educators, scientists and experts whose pedagogical or scientific and professional work is a lasting contribution to educational activity in the Republic of Croatia. The award is awarded in the form of a special recognition and in cash. The award is awarded by the "Ivan Filipović Award" Committee upon the proposal of the committees established by the Committee for each area of the educational system. The Committee has nine members, and the members and the president are appointed by the Croatian Parliament for a term of two years. Pursuant to Article 7 of the aforementioned law, the Regulations on the Work of the Committee for the Award of the "Ivan Filipović Award" (Official Gazette, No. 15/92) were adopted, which regulate the work of the Committee, the work of the committees, the criteria and the method of proposing and awarding the "Ivan Filipović Award".
