This medal is part of the Durands series of famous men.
Durand considered the Mint Administration a monopoly of the striking of medals an infringement on commercial freedom and harmful to his own interests and sought to have it repealed. When this effort failed, he decided to seek out a foreign mint, specifically that of Munich, to which he sent his dies. To distinguish these medals, it was decided to put the inscription MONACHII [Latin for ‘in Munich’] on their edges.
The photograph above shows a medal with “MONACHII” on the edge.
The photograph below shows a medal stricken in France. On this medal the obverse differs a little bit. Carl von Linné is here wearing his Order of the Polar Star.
On the reverse the text has changed from “NATUS ROESHULTAE IN SUECIA” to “NATUS SMOLANDIAE”. And “VIRÛM” has become “VIRORUM”.
